No matter which country you live in or the type of business you operate Health and Safety legislation has evolved over recent years to become a massive headache that can seriously affect your operations.
There’s potential for significant financial loss due to fines and the cost of compliance. However, the biggest hit comes from long drawn out periods of stress and anguish if a serious incident occurs.
These periods could last for years and can cause immeasurable damage to health (both physical and mental), family, vital business relationships and friendships.
We found this out first hand!
We’d been involved in the operations management of mining camps, oil rigs, ships, and university campuses for many years. We designed systems that reduced the “paper shuffling” which was always a big part of operations management.
We began to notice a trend occurring near the end of the 20th century.
Health and Safety legislation began to increase markedly. Consequently, our customers were finding that more time, money and resources needed to be placed on health and safety than ever before.
The trend became more concerning as a number of our most valued customers found themselves defending court actions.
More and more companies were losing court actions that previously would never have made it to court.
Not a single customer was complacent where the health and safety of their workers was concerned. However, that didn’t stop one valued customer and friend closing down and walking away from his business.
The risk of litigation had increased to the point where it wasn’t worth continuing.
We were discussing this one day with another customer and friend who had been through a two-year nightmare of court cases, huge costs and large insurance premium increases.
We came to the conclusion that it was now imperative for a business to do everything possible to make the workplace safe. At the same time they needed to but be able to PROVE that they had a health and safety system in place.
Similarly, they needed to show proof the system was relevant and up to date.
Many companies losing these battles could NOT prove they had an up to date and relevant system in place.
Because of the intricacies of health and safety in general, it was becoming very hard to MANAGE.
There were no readily available management systems specifically for health and safety.
Our customer then made a request that changed the whole course of our business.
He asked us to design him a system to make it simpler to manage every aspect of health and safety that he would need in order to feel secure about employing workers.
An application was created that we called Simple WHS.
We then hitched up the caravan and “hit the road” taking the software to agricultural festivals and machinery days all over the country. As a result, we learnt so much more about the challenges that business owners face in the management of health and safety.
Accordingly, the software was redesigned to incorporate all we’d learned. Our goal was to streamline health and safety management as much as possible. Additionally, our desire was to make it available via cloud servers so no installations or downloads were necessary.
This lead to the creation of the Simple WorkSafe SaaS software.
